More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.

Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans.

By the end of 2005, women accounted for 48% of all adults living with HIV worldwide, and for 59% in sub-Saharan Africa.

Young people (15-24 years old) account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide - around 6,000 become infected with HIV every day.

Of the 6.5 million people in developing and transitional countries who need life-saving AIDS drugs, only 1.3 million are receiving them.

By the end of the year, an estimated 38.6 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS. The year also saw around three million deaths from AIDS, despite recent improvements in access to antiretroviral treatment.

During the 1980s, there were rapid increases in the number of AIDS cases and deaths of persons with AIDS.
The decline in paediatric AIDS incidence is associated with more HIV testing of pregnant women and the manipulate of zidovudine (AZT) by HIV-infected pregnant women and their newborn infants.
Since July 1997, Florida has had confidential name-based HIV infection reporting only for original diagnoses.
The epidemic has promptly spread to every part of the USA and to all sectors of society.

The age class 35-44 years accounted for 39% of all AIDS cases diagnosed in 2004.

Interpreting HIV & AIDS statistics for the USA

In order to monitor the spread of the American epidemic and to assess the require for services and resources, there is a require for accurate surveillance.

Of the 93,566 adult and adolescent women with AIDS,

* 64% were exposed through heterosexual contact
* 34% were exposed through injection drug manipulate.
No adjustment is made for incomplete reporting.

In recent years, the operate of antiretroviral therapy has slowed the progression of HIV in many infected persons and hence contributed to a decline in AIDS incidence.

4 Since 2000, the following 35 areas have had laws or regulations requiring confidential name-based HIV infection reporting: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Modern Jersey, Modern Mexico, Modern York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
For the first lifetime, an HIV-positive person could be diagnosed with AIDS on the basis of an extremely low CD4 cell count.
Such AIDS statistics encompass not only the 50 states and the District of Columbia on the other labourer also Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Pacific Islands and the US Virgin Islands.

Estimates and reporting delays

There is often a delay between the generation of diagnosis of HIV or AIDS, or the generation of death, and the lifetime at which the event is reported.
Over the same period, the estimated number of original AIDS diagnoses increased by 10% among women and by 7% among men.
By the end of 2004, confidential name-based reporting of adult and youngster HIV cases had been implemented by 37 states (including Connecticut, which reports only paediatric cases) plus Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands.
Nearly three-quarters of all humanity who have died with AIDS did not live to the age of 45.

American HIV surveillance data are not comprehensive so many statistics must be based on reports of AIDS diagnoses.
In response, more states are at once implementing HIV context reporting.

AIDS diagnoses and deaths

In June 1981, the first cases of what is at once known as AIDS were reported in the USA.
On this chapter, all numbers are CDC estimates unless stated otherwise.
However, the expansion resulted in many humanity being diagnosed sooner than they would otherwise have been.

The number of deaths among persons with AIDS remained relatively stable in the period 1999-2003, before dropping slightly to an estimated 15,798 deaths in 2004.
Most humanity live with HIV for assorted years before developing AIDS.

The CDC surveillance report includes data on the number of persons diagnosed with AIDS, the number living with AIDS and the number of humanity with AIDS who have died.
There were an estimated 42,514 diagnoses in 2004.
National HIV Prevention Conference; June 2005; Atlanta.

An estimated 3,927 children were living with AIDS at the end of 2004, of whom 97% probably acquired the infection from their mothers.

We also have a more typical chapter about HIV & AIDS in the USA, describing the history of the epidemic and how the nation has responded.

AIDS statistics
Humanity living with AIDS

At the end of 2004, the CDC estimates that 415,193 persons were living with AIDS in the USA.

During 2004 there were an estimated 48 paediatric AIDS diagnoses, compared to 190 in 1999 and 823 in 1994.
Cases peaked with the 1993 expansion of the context definition3, and then declined.
This money that AIDS surveillance data are less able to represent trends in the incidence of HIV infection or the impact of the epidemic on the health-care system.
In the USA, statistics on both HIV and AIDS are collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and published in an annual report.
The majority of such persons would have gone on to develop one of the other AIDS-defining conditions, so would eventually have been included in the figures anyway.
After reaching a plateau, the number of diagnoses increased slightly each year from 2001 to 2004.
Black persons and Hispanics have been disproportionately affected since the early years of the epidemic.
The most significant feature of the 1993 expansion of the definition was the inclusion of CD4 criteria.
7

During 2004, an estimated 38,730 original diagnoses of HIV infection were reported from the 35 areas with a history of confidential name-based reporting, representing a slight increase since 2003.
The definition includes some humanity who since diagnosis have recovered their health by taking antiretroviral therapy.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, an estimated 529,113 persons with AIDS have died in the USA.

It is thought that more than one million persons are living with HIV in the USA and that more than half a million have died after developing AIDS.

From 2000 to 2004, the estimated number of original AIDS cases increased in all racial/ethnic groups.

Who is affected by AIDS?

During the 1990s, the epidemic shifted steadily toward a growing proportion of AIDS cases among black persons and Hispanics and in women, and toward a decreasing proportion in MSM, although this class remains the largest single exposure organization.
The most dramatic drops in both cases and deaths began in 1996, with the widespread operate of combination antiretroviral therapy.

From 2000 to 2004, the estimated number of original AIDS cases increased in all racial/ethnic groups.

HIV statistics

At the end of 2004, the CDC estimates that there were 462,792 persons living with HIV/AIDS in the 35 areas that have a history of confidential name-based HIV reporting, based on reported diagnoses and deaths4.
For this basis the CDC estimates the number of diagnoses, deaths and persons living with HIV or AIDS by adjusting for reporting delays, taking into account the differences between categories.

6 According to the number of AIDS cases reported to the CDC, the 35 areas with a history of confidential name-based reporting of HIV infection represent approximately 61% of the US epidemic.
